2) Huascar Brazoban
Huascar Brazoban looked like a steal for the Mets earlier this season. Acquired at the 2024 trade deadline from the Miami Marlins, Brazoban rebounded in a big way from a poor first impression down the stretch of the season. He allowed 14 earned runs, the same number of walks, and only 17 K’s throughout his first 21 innings in a Mets uniform.
However, his first 30 innings of the year yielded a 0.90 ERA, 3.06 FIP, and 0.77 WHIP. Brazoban struck out a healthy number of opponents with a 26.8% K%, with a walk rate of only 7.1%. The right-hander allowed just two home runs with an above-average 87.4 MPH exit velocity and 7% barrel percentage.
However, the wheels began to fall off during the last week of May, and Brazoban has seemingly been unable to right the ship. It’s only 13.1 innings, but he has allowed 15 earned runs. Brazoban has allowed more free passes than strikeouts, with 14 walks to only 11 K’s. He’s gotten walloped, allowing two home runs, and seeing both his exit velocity and barrel rate jump to 90.3 MPH and 13.2%, respectively.
Brazoban is potentially pitching himself out of a roster spot. He did great earlier this season, but has struggled badly over the last month plus. There are other issues in the bullpen than just Brazoban, but he’s been one of the biggest culprits for the Mets’ struggles in recent weeks.
