The start of the 2025 season has been better than the New York Mets could have expected. They're currently 18-7, the best record in the MLB, and have a five-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies for first in the NL East. All of this has occurred despite players like Juan Soto not playing at the caliber we are accustomed to seeing. Even with the team's impressive performance, there is a feeling that the best is yet to come.
Yet despite all the positivity surrounding the team, there are a few players who fall short of expectations. Players whose struggles could result in a reduced role or remove from the MLB roster. Here are three players who are trending in the wrong direction.
1) Danny Young
If there is one player who has caught the fury of Mets fans, it's Danny Young. While the Mets boast the best ERA in the majors, Young has not had the same success as the rest of the team. Through 7 and 1/3 innings this season, he has an ERA of 4.91, with ten strikeouts to three walks, a 1.50 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 81. It feels like every time he enters the game, the collective blood pressure of Mets fans goes through the roof.
It's not like Young has a track record of being a successful reliever either. Last season, in his first year in Queens, Young pitched to a 4.54 ERA over 37 2/3 innings, with 38 strikeouts and 18 walks, a 1.248 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 87. With how he's prefrormed over the past couple of years, it's easy to assume that he's one of those players that can not handle playing in New York.
The struggles alone would be enough to get Young DFA, however, players returning from injury make it all the more likely. With Dedniel Nunez about to return from the injured list, he will likely be Young's replacement. In 2024, Nunez was an effective reliever, pitching to a 2.31 ERA over 35 innings, with 48 strikeouts to eight walks, a 0.914 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 170.
