Suddenly relevant Red Sox only 2.5 games back are a trade match for these 3 NY Mets players

The Red Sox are looking more like buyers than sellers and these Mets players should have their attention all weekend.

The Boston Red Sox are suddenly relevant in the AL Wild Card race. A six-game winning streak, an event the 2026 New York Mets failed to read the memo about as an option, has pushed them within striking distance of a playoff berth. What felt like another fight between basement dwellers to finish off the first-half may have turned into a chance for Boston to closely scout some trade deadline options.

Their 43-48 record isn’t ideal, but neither is having .500 teams fight for a playoff spot. Between them and the 47-47 Seattle Mariners are the likely to fall Minnesota Twins, unconfident Houston Astros, and equally as lost Toronto Blue Jays. There's a chance for the Red Sox to make a run as they sit only 2.5 games back. The Mets will look to play spoiler.

Aside from the action on the field comes the conversations off of it. The Mets and Red Sox tend to favor similar players and a trade for any of these players could help make sense.

These Mets players could be a match for the Red Sox if they can maintain their buyer status

1) Freddy Peralta

The Red Sox will get to see Freddy Peralta pitch against them on Saturday. With their recent loss of Ranger Suarez to injury, they’re going to need to earn every win they can. They’ve had a strange year with pitching, Sonny Gray turning back the clock, Garrett Crochett pitching terribly before getting hurt, and several young players (both expected and not) picking up some of the slack. Peralta would be a good buy low option for the Red Sox. They’ll get a firsthand look at what he can and cannot do. Considering the Mets and Red Sox have made multiple trades with David Stearns and Craig Breslow in charge, we should expect a conversation to take place.

2) Luke Weaver

There might not be a more perfect match for the Red Sox than Luke Weaver. Aside from how much of a troll job it would be against the New York Yankees, they’d be buying one of their greatest needs: a high-leverage right-handed reliever. He’s good insurance for Aroldis Chapman, but more importantly an improvement over several others who’ve taken the mound for the club in relief throughout the season. Weaver should be in high-demand and with several teams likely to search for a closer, it’s going to take the Red Sox a huge offer to obtain Weaver.

3) Brooks Raley

You could include any Mets reliever up for sale as a potential option for the Red Sox. Brooks Raley, A.J. Minter, or Huascar Brazoban all fit. Raley seems to fit more as a Danny Coulombe upgrade than Minter who’d be more of a match for a club with a little more payroll flexibility. Raley is earning about a third of what Minter is and with the Red Sox probably in greater need than one single left-handed reliever, spreading out the added cash they’re paying players should have them focused more on Raley.
