3 NY Mets players fans were ready to replace who are actually having a productive May

NY Mets fans probably wanted these players replaced after a rough April. However, they've since found a groove in May.

2) Starling Marte

The last two seasons have not been too promising for Starling Marte. He played less than 100 games in 2023 and 2024, totaling just 711 plate appearances. The production when he was on the field wasn’t great, as he only hit .258/.314/.357 with a .296 wOBA and 90 wRC+. On top of declining offense, his defense dramatically slipped, as the once Gold Glove outfielder put up -13 DRS and -14 OAA.

The start of 2025 made Marte’s outlook even more bleak. In the month of April, the veteran outfielder only had nine hits in 62 plate appearances. He at least hit two home runs with a pair of doubles while only striking out a dozen times. But Marte only drew four walks. Not only was he not producing with the bat, but it’s even worse once you consider Marte only saw time as a designated hitter, not spending a single inning in the outfield.

However, Marte has found somewhat of a groove in May. He has ten hits in 41 plate appearances this month. What’s impressive is that he’s struck out just five times, which is a K% of 12.2%. Marte has also drawn four walks. The only downside is that Marte has just one extra base hit, that being a double. But he’s still shown decent raw power, with an exit velocity sitting around 90 MPH, so there may still be some extra bases left in the tank for Marte.

Marte doesn’t have to hit like he did in his prime. If he can be a solid part-timer and pair with Jesse Winker (when he eventually makes his way back from the IL), the Mets will have a productive duo at DH. Getting respectable production out of Marte would prevent the Mets from having to worry a ton about having to find a potential replacement closer to the trade deadline.
