Brett Baty should be gone by May 1
Brett Baty was a former first-round pick by the Mets, as he was taken 12th overall in 2019. The third baseman quickly became a top 100 prospect, and by 2023, was one of the best position player prospects in all of baseball, with MLB Pipeline ranking him behind just Gunnar Henderson as the best 3B prospect.
However, Baty has fallen flat on his expectations. From his debut in 2022 through last season, Baty has only hit .215/.282/.325 in 602 plate appearances. Despite projecting as a big-time power threat, Baty has only hit 15 home runs with a sub-par 6.9% barrel rate. Plate discipline has also been an issue. Baty struck out 26.4% of the time, with a whiff rate of nearly 30% heading into 2025. He put up just a .270 wOBA and 72 wRC+ in this first stretch of games.
Baty had a strong spring training this year, but it has failed to carry over into the regular season. The infielder has just four hits in 31 plate appearances. Only one has gone for extra bases, that being a double. On top of that, he’s yet to draw a walk and has struck out 13 times. He’s done even worse than in previous seasons. For reference, Jacob deGrom had six hits and seven total bases in the month of April during 2021. Even if his defense at second base hasn’t been horrible, having over three times as many strikeouts to hits can’t be happening.
