3 players who’ve made themselves more desirable to the NY Mets in the MLB playoffs

A strong postseason made these potential fits a little more desirable.

2) Devin Williams

Look, I’m scared of this idea too. Devin Williams was practically broken by Alonso in the 2024 postseason. The New York Yankees couldn’t have known when they traded for him they’d be acquiring a pitcher about to double his career ERA. The regular season wasn’t pretty for Williams who finished with a 4.79 ERA. Removed from the closer’s role, it was a very strange year for Williams who managed to hold batters to a .197 batting average and still find ways to give up runs. It seems just a slight uptick in hits allowed and home runs did the damage with no one ever getting stranded.

Williams struggled in his last two trips to the postseason with the Milwaukee Brewers yet somehow found a way to be a success with the Yankees in this year’s October trip. He tossed 2 scoreless in each round the Yankees played in. He was the winning pitcher in Game 2 against the Boston Red Sox after throwing a clean 8th inning in a game tied 3-3. Despite allowing a leadoff single, Williams faced the minimum thanks to a double play.

A natural match for the Mets in free agency for a couple of reasons, his October success probably isn’t enough to sway whatever opinion the club has of him. He’s surely not going to replace Edwin Diaz in a closer role if the star reliever leaves. Williams would be a setup man where he had plenty of success in Milwaukee. With A.J. Minter expected to be fully healthy next year, I’d predict Williams lands somewhere else.
