These three Mets players might not be as important in 2025 as originally planned.

2) Ronny Mauricio

It’s kind of unbelievable how much has changed with the Mets since we last saw Ronny Mauricio in the big leagues. Called up at the tail end of the 2023 season, he missed out on all of the fun of 2024. Had he not gotten hurt during Winter League action, there was a good chance Mauricio would have logged a full season of action—or at least something close to it.

The long road back to health was a bit of a struggle for Mauricio. His rehab officially ended this weekend with Mauricio officially getting reassigned to the minor leagues to continue his march back toward the major leagues. The trouble facing him is with Luisangel Acuna playing well, Brett Baty beginning to hit, and no room whatsoever for the Mets to even demote Mark Vientos, Mauricio will need to bulldoze his way past someone else to even be a consideration.

We should see Mauricio reach the majors at some point. It’s an important season beyond just personal accomplishments. His official demotion to the minor leagues eats up his final option. Moving forward, he’ll either need to be on the MLB roster or risk being DFA’d.

Out of all of the multiverses out there, only one may exist where all of these young Mets infielders exist together on one team. His injury might have ultimately set him back a little too far in terms of timing and, in a worst case scenario, ability.
