Nothing ever goes the way we plan it, does it? There’s a reason why we play the games. Multiple New York Mets players have already stunned us with All-Star caliber performances. Then there are those whose contributions in 2025 might not be quite as important as originally anticipated.

While not definitive, the importance of these three Mets players in 2025 need to be rethought.

1) Dedniel Nunez

The awaited 2025 season debut of Dedniel Nunez at the major league level took a while. Dealing with some health concerns entering the regular season, he started off in Syracuse and recently made his way to the majors in the club’s time of need. However, after a wild 3.2 innings spanning 5 games where his ERA sat at 7.36, he was sent to the minors to work out a few kinks.

Nunez walked 6 and struck out only 3 in the limited action. Rather than try to fix it on the fly, the Mets decided over the weekend to have him sent to the minors with newly acquired lefty Jose Castillo replacing him on the MLB roster. It was the only practical move to make. Despite some better outings of late, Nunez hadn’t proven he was trustworthy enough.

Last year's out-of-nowhere performance by Nunez had many penciling him in as one of the most important relievers for this year. Maybe it isn’t meant to be. A Rule 5 Draft pick last several years ago only to be returned to the Mets accomplished very little in the minors until becoming a full-time reliever beginning in 2022. He, alongside a plethora of other arms, outperformed expectations last year.

Nunez will remain an option for the Mets later this year. Unfortunately, he’s going to have to prove it in Syracuse for a while and maybe await an emergency call-up.
