Coming off a series sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Mets are off to a more-than-respectable 6-3 start to their season. Things are going pretty well in Queens, but the opening stretch to the season has exposed some areas in which the Mets could improve. A lot of the team's early weaknesses lie in the lackluster performances of players who just can't afford to be subpar; these guys are fighting to keep their roster spots, but the way they've played so far proves they just might not have what it takes to stay here.

1) Brett Baty

This is probably the one most fans have on their mind. The 25-year-old struggled in his first few years of major league experience, and since his debut in 2022, he's been up-and-down from Triple-A, where his bat thrives; since 2023, Baty boasts a .934 OPS with Syracuse. His biggest problem has always been translating his offensive success in the minors to his big league at-bats.

In the absence of Jeff McNeil, another window of opportunity opened for Baty as he would be platooning with Luisangel Acuña at second base to begin the season. It looked as if a breakout for Baty was finally on the rise, as he slashed .353/.441/.745 in spring training and truly looked ready to take on his new role.

However, so far, Baty is squandering the opportunity presented to him. In 21 plate appearances, he is slashing just .095/.095/.143 with just two hits. His wRC+ is in the negatives. For a guy that looked like he finally figured it out, it is an understatement to say it has been a disappointing start for Brett Baty.
