3 NY Mets players who'll definitely be gone after the Jorge Polanco signing

Don't expect these players to make it to Opening Day after the Jorge Polanco signing.

3) Ji Hwan Bae

A roster now at full capacity, the Mets have to start thinking about where they execute players from the 40-man. Trading McNeil and Vientos clears up two spots. We can assume if there is a blockbuster trade coming with the Padres or someone else we could see Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong gone, too. Even Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuna are candidates. None of these guys are as affected by the Polanco signing as Ji Hwan Bae.

A waiver claim by the Mets earlier this offseason, he’s right there alongside Jared Young as someone who was never meant to be an Opening Day option. However, Young gives the Mets some added protection against an injury to one of their lefty swingers. He’s a first baseman/corner outfielder/DH who, if Polanco was to get hurt before the season began, would immediately replace him.

No such favorable scenario exists for Bae who was a questionable roster addition simply for his domestic violence suspension from a few years ago. Easily everyone’s least favorite Mets addition of the offseason, he doesn’t even have good big league numbers to explain why the move was made in the first place.

It was only a matter of time before Bae became unnecessary. Although he has a minor league option remaining, the 40-man roster spot is better used on someone more deserving.
