2) Mark Vientos
If Polanco is playing first base and getting DH opportunities, where does this leave Mark Vientos? He could be the right-handed half of at least one of those platoons. It seems wasteful and almost like something a GM would inherit rather than desire. Vientos needs to play regularly if for no other reason than to find out what he can or cannot do. Limiting him to facing lefties will do nothing for his trade value. The Mets should trade him now before any interest dwindles to a droplet.
Vientos turned 26 this past week and should still draw interest because of the power he has shown over the last two years. He’s still an above-average slugger with holes in the rest of his game. No one should view him as more than a DH with more patient ball clubs, possibly allowing him a full season to adjust to playing first base.
Only in the Mets’ Plan-Z would he ever be a serious candidate to start the year as the team’s third baseman. Brett Baty plays the position better and even if he was to end up traded, we’d have to figure someone else would get the defensive job.
Vientos might be one of the perfect players to send to the San Diego Padres in a massive trade which brings pricier big leaguers to the Mets in exchange for some more affordable players the Padres can grow with.
