For the New York Mets, today is like the first day of school. Pitchers and catchers were due to report to spring training yesterday and today will feature the first official workout for pitchers and catchers. The expectations and the tone of a season with lofty expectations can begin to reverberate officially throughout the organizations.
Following a season of great achievement, the Mets look to get to the same goals as a team they did last year, except go even farther in the playoffs. On an individual level, there are players who are primed for a bounceback season, while there are examples of those who will regress.
Francisco Alvarez seeks to unleash his power more in 2025.
Francisco Alvarez made headlines this week, claiming that the Mets have the best lineup in baseball heading into the season. In order for that to happen, he will need to improve upon his numbers from last year. He clubbed just 11 home runs in 2024 compared to 25 the year before.
Part of his struggles perhaps had to do with the thumb injury he suffered in April that kept him out for two months.
But another reason was perhaps he had problems laying off breaking pitches outside the strike zone and a lack of plate discipline. He hit just .159 against breaking stuff last season and the opposition kept giving him junk low and away.
In what is his last season before he is eligible for arbitration, Alvarez has reason to produce this season. He also has too much raw power to hit 11 home runs in just 342 plate appearances. Seven of those round trippers traveled at least 400 feet, which speaks to his strength.
He will get back to at least 20 home runs in 2025 to help lengthen the Mets lineup to back up the belief he has with his team that they will be a special one offensively.
