2) Luis Torrens

The starting catching job belongs to Luis Torrens—at least for now. We’re only a little over a week past the demotion of Francisco Alvarez. As lost as he was at the plate, Torrens hasn’t been able to do a whole lot in June either. Despite hitting the ball well, the stats aren’t showing up. He hit his first home run since March in Sunday’s finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Not honestly expected to truly carry the team offensively, fans did expect more from him in June.

Unfortunately, Torrens had one of the roughest stretches of anyone. He batted .135/.167/.192 for the month with the blast against the Pirates accounting for his lone extra-base hit of the month.

There isn’t much the Mets can do right now other than hope Torrens runs into some luck. Eventually, if he keeps clobbering the ball, it has to result in some more hits, right?

If all Torrens does is play an effective game behind the plate, the team can accept a lesser showing at the plate. But Torrens hasn’t been so exceptional with his boneheaded play this month that involved using his catcher’s mask to move the baseball. Recent struggles by pitchers have given him a whole new task to try to work on.

The Mets need Torrens to hit for a couple of reasons. One is to further justify the decision to demote Alvarez. Another is because of how absent those around him in the bottom half of the order have been. Unless they begin to contribute more, responsibility shifts onto Torrens, who we know is a professional big league hitter. It’s a shame he decided to go through a cold stretch when many fans finally got what they were pleading for: more of him.
