Boxing Day arrives on December 26 and involves more than throwing fists. It’s about boxing up gifts you received the day prior and returning them to the store. The New York Mets have a few players we’d like to do this with.

Rather than go player-by-player and even consider those signed on minor league deals, we’re going to keep it strictly within the 40-man roster and players added this offseason. Let’s hope David Stearns kept the receipt on this trio.

1) Ji Hwan Bae

When discussing a player or coach’s job, it’s best to not make it too personal. In some cases, it’s difficult to not make it so. This is the case with Ji Hwan Bae whose domestic violence suspension in 2019 is difficult to overlook. Looking at him from a pure baseball standpoint, we have enough other evidence to get a refund.

A lifetime .223 hitter in the majors with speed being his best attribute, Bae is a versatile albeit not very good defender. The Mets claimed him off of waivers back in November and fans have been eager to see the team do the right thing and move on.

Now 163 games into his MLB career, he has been worth -0.8 WAR and has a 62 OPS+. Nothing about his big league performance aligns with winning.

At 26-years-old and a .305 batting average in Triple-A, one can think of him as a change of scenery player. I’d agree. Let’s change his scenery altogether and let him go into free agency.
