These three members of the Mets 40-man roster should be shopped around for immediate help.

2) Ronny Mauricio

Despite the inconsistencies, there should be interest  from other teams to acquire Ronny Mauricio. He has shown in the minor leagues he has a decent power ceiling. A consideration for teams at second base, third base, or even shortstop, Mauricio is someone who could slot in at three different spots. Any team to acquire him would be adding a player with some big unknowns. He hasn’t even played in 60 MLB games and has one remaining minor league option left.

This is the summer where the Mets need to decide Mauricio’s fate. He’s either someone they move forward with or try trading away before the last remnants of his trade value disappears. A poor output at the major league level with no standout skill like Acuna with speed, the Mets would need to do some selling on what he can be rather than what he is.

The Mets don’t need to rush to trade Mauricio, but they should have a clear choice in mind between him and Acuna. They have similar qualities with noticeably different strengths. Mauricio’s failure to put together any lengthy stretch of success in the majors might be a tie-breaking point. At least Acuna had September 2024 and April 2025.

Mauricio has been a highly ranked Mets prospect since about 2019 when Baseball America had him in their top 100. Ranking in the 40s-60s in the earlier part of the decade on several lists, the injury that knocked him out for all of 2024 remains the biggest deterrent in his career to establishing himself at a reasonable timeline. It has been an uphill battle since.
