3) Spencer Steer - The guy Pete Alonso might’ve replaced
The Cincinnati Reds were a perceived landing spot for Alonso. At first base last year, they had Spencer Steer. He was worth the same 6 OAA as Contreras. Only now arbitration-eligible, he’d be someone the Reds would want to flip to fulfill other needs of theirs as they potentially seek out a more proven first base option, possibly even one of the many Alonso alternatives.
Steer has played all over the field with first base and left field being his most regularly seen spots. Home runs in the low 20s in each of his three full seasons, his batting average has been down in each of the last two years. He strikes out about an average number of times and walks a little more. He’s a much lighter hitter than Alonso at a far lower cost.
The Reds could use more power, but a guy like Vientos probably doesn’t motivate them to make a trade like this. Trading Steer away might just make sense for them if they seek out someone like Munetaka Murakami or trade for someone else, even Walker or within the division to acquire Contreras. They might even be a candidate to reunite with Eugenio Suarez and ask him to play first base.
Steer is in a bit of a holding pattern as to what his future with the Reds looks like. Easily someone they could move back to left field and accept the poor defense he provides them, they mine as well give David Stearns a call to see what he’ll give up for Steer. Lately, Stearns has been unpredictable. He might offer them way more than he should.
