3) Trade for Sean Harney

Maybe the quietest Mets trade this offseason, the Mets added pitcher Sean Harney in a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. They gave up international pool money which the Rays probably used on some teenager from a country no one knows about.

Harney comes to the Mets as a 26-year-old with only 10 games at Double-A or higher. An 8th round selection in 2022, nothing about his professional career in particular stands out on either the positive or negative. The majority of his career was spent pitching for High-A Bowling Green where he was 5-0 with a 3.12 ERA. He did manage to advance to Double-A for a second consecutive year in 2024, performing well in his 9 innings of work.

Projected to pitch this season in Double-A, it’s not outrageous for him to make a giant leap to the majors—just not very likely. The Mets are fully loaded with more experienced depth pieces who’ve gotten outs at the major league level. Harney is a nice little addition to the organization who’ll have to directly show the Mets they were right for adding him and the Rays were foolish for letting him go.

Minor league player in 2025. Potential major league depth in 2026? The Mets must see something in him.
