3) The Mets have shown they won’t rely specifically on prospects next year

As tantalizing as it is to have a couple of rookies on the MLB roster to open the season, it’s not realistic. Names fans have been mentioning this offseason include Drew Gilbert who was hurt and didn’t perform well in Triple-A last year as well as Brandon Sproat who stayed healthy but barely pitched in Triple-A and wasn’t very good when he did.

For sure two players we should see at some point in the majors in 2025 as long as neither is traded first, the Mets have made enough moves this offseason to eliminate either’s chances of being forced onto the Opening Day roster if not deemed ready.

The November trade for Jose Siri gave the Mets a center field candidate to pair with Tyrone Taylor. With Sproat, they’ve added more experienced players. Everything from Griffin Canning down to Justin Hagenman. They’ve owned up to how quickly prospects can fizzle out. Last year’s lack of progress from multiple youngsters was enough to identify where the team was lacking. At the very least, many of these additions to the roster can at least kick the can down the road a little further for some major league debuts.

Give the Mets an early A+ for not forcing themselves into having to ask a kid to step onto a big league field before he’s ready and doing so with players who could be cut when the time is right.
