3) Joey Meneses
We all knew we liked the Joey Meneses signing when it happened. We didn’t jump for joy like we just won the WBC. Understanding what Meneses has done at the major league level and the depth he can provide the Mets is what made him such a good get for the ball club. He didn’t play much early on in spring training. Lately, we’ve gotten much more of the late-blooming first baseman/corner outfielder who has indeed lived up to our expectations even if it’s only spring training.
Slashing .308/.357/.615 with a home run in his first 6 games, it’s a small sample of what he’s probably about to do for a good part of the season in Triple-A. Meneses is clearly better than a minor leaguer. The questions with him are whether he can have sustained success at the major league level again.
Over the winter, Meneses put up monstrous numbers in the Mexican Winter League. A .320/.386/.511 slash line with 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 262 trips to the plate seemed to confirm what the Mets believed: the guy can wield a stick.
The best role for Meneses would be some level of Starling Marte insurance. Considering he’s already not 100% for Opening Day, it’s good to have him around as a backup plan and hopefully there’s no opt out he’ll choose to utilize.
