2) The Mets accept their starting lineup for what it is, don’t add anyone, and suffer the consequences

The Mets need a bat. They might not believe it, but the current lineup is banking on 5 spots with questions. At least one of them needs something a little surer.

After the Fab Four, we have a problem. Starling Marte is back and healthy but not an everyday player. A scenario where Jesse Winker comes back can provide some hope. He wasn’t playing well before getting hurt (the first time) and has tanked in several recent seasons. That same small militia of infielders they could trade from is hit and miss as well.

Of all the positions, center field seems clearest to upgrade. Tyrone Taylor is too automatic of an out. His .570 OPS is alarmingly low for a guy who has consistently been in the low .700s which is already not so great.

There aren’t any surprising names out there who could fill the center field role for the Mets. Even in the offseason, players like Cedric Mullins and Luis Robert Jr. were potential trade candidates the team could have sought out. Instead, they made an easy trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for Jose Siri who has been sidelined since mid-April.

If the lineup’s needs were simpler, we could probably depend on Stearns to do something. Because it’s a little more complicated, with the most obvious, there should be some worry this is a realistic nightmare that could come to fruition. The Mets could add at third base or even the DH spot in some way. Center field has options, but they’re limited and other contenders will be bidding for those same players, too.
