Kansas City Royals

Site expert Tim Boyle pinned the Kansas City Royals as the eventual destination the Mets would trade McNeil to. Tim had the following to say about his prediction on the Royals acquiring McNeil this offseason: "Last year, the Royals had Jonathan India and Adam Frazier on the team. India was arguably the worst defender in MLB, and Frazier is leaving in free agency. Kansas City has shown they appreciate the versatile skills McNeil can bring. Even if he isn't just used at second base, the outfield could benefit from his presence every once in a while. Their three most frequently used outfielders at each position combined to hit 12 home runs, the same total McNeil had with the Mets in his frustrating 2025 season."

Jonathan India, who the Royals likely hoped could lock down second base for them in 2025. While he primarily played second base, he also saw time at third base and left field. As Tim noted, he was a very poor defender at all positions. But since making his debut in 2021, India's -34 defensive runs saved at the keystone are the second worst in baseball, and his -29 outs above average are the worst. Plus, he only turned in a .669 OPS, .301 wOBA, and 89 wRC+.

The Royals also brought in Adam Frazier at the trade deadline from the Pittsburgh Pirates. While Frazier did turn in a solid .283/.320/.402 triple-slash over 197 plate appearances with the Royals, and graded out as an average or better defender at second base, third base, and both outfield corners this year, he was also only a rental. Plus, he struggled with the bat in his hands prior to his acquisition by the Royals, and in the three seasons prior to 2025. Like Tim mentions, McNeil could be the sort of utility man the Royals like. The Royals utilized India at both left field and third base for the first time in his Major League career, and Adam Frazier is known for his multi-position utility.

Tim is also correct in the assessment that the Royals also need help in the outfield. McNeil began to see playing time in center field this year, and while he wasn't particularly elite at the position, he has now logged more than 200 innings at all three outfield spots.
