3) Edwin Diaz's whiff rate

Edwin Diaz hasn’t gotten off to an outstanding start to the 2025 season. He’s already allowed six earned runs and seven walks in just 12 innings. But most signs predict better things ahead for the right-hander. He has just a 2.44 xFIP and 2.49 SIERA and is getting plenty of strikeouts and ground balls, with 20s and a 50% GB%.

Many of those strikeouts are on swings. Diaz has a whiff rate of 40.3%. There are only three pitchers this season who have induced a whiff rate of at least 40%. The only ones that rank above Diaz include crosstown rival, Yankees’ reliever Fernando Cruz at 46.3%, and LA Dodgers’ veteran Kirby Yates at 45.4%.This places Diaz in the 98th percentile of pitchers in 2025.

His four-seamer gets plenty of whiffs, with a 28.3% rate. That is well above the league average rate of 21.1%. However, Diaz’s slider has been next to untouchable with a 50.3% rate. There are only 21 pitches in baseball that have induced that high of a whiff rate in at least ten plate appearances. Diaz’s slider ranks 13th highest.

With how many whiffs Diaz is getting, he’ll eventually turn things around. Most underlying metrics, as does his track record, show that he’s better than this. As things stand right now, Diaz is on pace for the second-highest single-season whiff percentage of his career (third-highest if you include the shortened 2020 season, where he only tossed 25.2 innings).
