2) Luis Torrens’ barrel rate

Luis Torrens took over the starting catcher role to open 2025 after a hand injury to former top prospect Francisco Alvarez. Torrens did fine to help bridge the gap until Alvarez was back in action. The backstop is currently slashing .241/.279/.397 with a .297 wOBA and 90 wRC+ across 61 plate appearances.

Statcast has looked fondly upon Torrens’ work so far with the bat. He is in the 90th percentile or better in xwOBA, xBA, and xSLG%. However, if there is one stat that is very promising on Torrens’ Baseball Savant page, it’s his barrel rate. It currently sits at 18.2%, which is in the 92nd percentile. That is the 23rd-best among batters with at least 50 plate appearances and greater than the likes of Corbin Carroll, Elly De La Cruz, Shohei Ohtani, and Kyle Tucker.

Torrens barrel rate is only surpassed by very few at his position, with at least 50 trips to the dish. One is Cal Raleigh, who has the second most home runs by a catcher in the 2020s. The next is Sean Murphy, who has the sixth most home runs by a catcher in the current decade. Third is Logan O’Hoppee, with a 143 wRC+ so far this season.

Even if Torrens can’t be the regular backstop to the Mets, he could still have a very strong year. He’s making good contact at a rate you only see some of the top power hitters in the sport making.  If he continues to do that, he'll carve out a nice role as a back-up catcher with plus power.
