We’re quickly nearing the end of the first full month of the 2025 MLB season. The New York Mets have been tame when it comes to roster moves. Some lack of flexibility but more so no need to change things up thanks to how well the club has performed has allowed them to keep most of the Opening Day roster intact.

Things should change before we get to May 1. Healthy players coming back means depth pieces go “buh bye.” Before we get to May 1, expect these inevitable Mets roster swaps to take place.

1) Francisco Alvarez back from the IL, Hayden Senger to AAA

Francisco Alvarez is probably days away from returning to the Mets and with him coming back it means there is no room for backup catcher Hayden Senger any longer. It’s nothing personal against Senger. He was always meant to be a temporary piece on this roster. Because of Luis Torrens’ lingering injuries, he has been able to get some additional playing time in Alvarez’s absence. We can’t look at him any way other than to tip our caps. Senger has been far above what we could’ve ever wanted.

Senger is batting .200/.231/.240 with a double. It’s not a bad performance at the plate. More important is how he has thrown out 3 out of 5 attempted base thieves. He’s not creating runs. Senger has taken the approach of preventing them.

The return of Alvarez will be a welcomed one even if the feel-good Senger story comes to an end. He should get eased into more regular playing time as Torrens shares the duties a little extra. How Carlos Mendoza ultimately decides to use both backstops will be largely on Alvarez who needs to hit consistently to remain on the field. Otherwise, Torrens could chase him from a few starts.
