3) Eric Orze

This is one that might not catch you by surprise because of how fresh his presence on the Mets was. Debuting in 2024 as a member of the Mets, Eric Orze ended up in the November 2024 trade with the Rays for Jose Siri. Yet again, Tampa Bay got one over on the Mets.

And to think, they’re the same team who traded Vasil to the White Sox (after adding him from the Philadelphia Phillies) and gave us Tyler Zuber in exchange for Paul Gervase (now with the Los Angeles Dodgers). We’ll always have Brooks Raley…

Orze played as complete of a season as possible without actually being in the majors for a full year. He logged 33 games and 41.2 innings. The result was a 3.02 ERA. Not too shabby for a guy the Mets never seemed to have much interest in using at the MLB level.

Orze was a master of soft contact with a 30.7% hard hit rate. The walks were a tad high at 4.1 BB/9 and the strikeouts low at 8.6 K/9. It could be a part of the reason why he spent a good portion of this past year in the minor leagues rather than contributing in the majors.

There’s no question the Rays will have use for him moving forward. Despite being 28, they’ve tapped into something the Mets either couldn’t or didn’t think was there. Apparently it wasn’t quite enough as Orze was traded to the Minnesota Twins in mid-November.
