2) Carlos Cortes
Drafted by the Mets in the third round in 2018, Carlos Cortes stayed with the organization through 2024. He stalled out in Triple-A and was released after the year. The Athletics decided they’d see what he could offer them.
Cortes dominated in Triple-A, batting .322 with 17 home runs in just over 300 plate appearances. He was awarded a chance to play in the big leagues late in the year. He didn’t slow down much. Cortes added 4 home runs and a .309 batting average in 99 chances.
Another player with experience all over the field, he also found a home in right field more frequently than anywhere else. The crowded Athletics roster had a hole and he was able to enter his name into the competition.
Already 28-years-old, Cortes should remain a player the Athletics stick with at least in some capacity. He has minor league options so they aren’t hamstrung into forcing him on the major league roster. As promising as some of their young position players were, depth was an issue for them. Cortes adds value there.
