Players like Jake Mangum and Mike Vasil landed themselves in the hall of ex-New York Mets prospects the team let slip away. Mangum hit .296 while playing a speedy and productive center field for the Tampa Bay Rays. Vasil pitched to a 2.50 ERA mostly out of the bullpen for the Chicago White Sox as a long man.
Several steps behind Pete Crow-Armstrong in terms of notoriety, Mangum and Vasil would have been incredibly useful for the Mets this past year.
They weren’t alone in putting together good years somewhere else. In a smaller sample, these three former Mets prospects had productive seasons in the big leagues.
1) Jeremiah Jackson
A player the Mets added at the 2023 trade deadline in exchange for…what’s his face…pause…Dominic Leone! A fringe major league pitcher having a bad season at the time, Leone went to the Los Angeles Angels for one of their fallen prospects, Jeremiah Jackson. He finished the season strong, but in 2024, he batted .205 with 19 home runs in Double-A. The infield defensive versatility wasn’t enough to convince the Mets he should remain a part of their system. He became a free agent and landed on a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles. He couldn’t possibly play his way into any action in their crowded infield, could he?
Jackson ended up with 183 plate appearances and was a regular in right field for Baltimore. He slashed .276/.328/.447 with 5 home runs.
Strikeouts were plentiful, fanning 27.3% of the time. However, his ability to play right field and third base as well made him a nice addition for an Orioles team that greatly underachieved.
He’ll turn 26 next March and as long as he keeps up this pace, the short-pocketed Orioles should have ways to get him into games.
