The "June Swoon" hit the Mets yet again this year. A blown-lead loss against the Rays on June 13th spiraled into a seven-game losing streak, which was just the beginning of a stretch in which the Mets went just 3-14. They were swept three times, including by the last-place Pirates, who outscored them 30-4 in the series.
However, the Mets are beginning to regain the stride of a winning baseball team that carried them into mid-June, much of this being attributed to the "Fab Four" of Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo. Since July 2's win over the Brewers that snowballed into what is actively a 5-1 stretch, the quartet is slashing .333/.429/.667, .435/.500/.609, .267/.389/.733, and .333/.385/.792, respectively.
The "Fab Four" have been contributing to big wins all season long, especially in this recent stretch. As we inch closer to the deadline, we know there's a possibility that Stearns and Cohen will make some big moves to get this team to where it needs to be. Who can they target offensively to make it the "Fab Five?"
1) Byron Buxton
Well, this would certainly make a splash. The Mets' starting centerfielder is currently Tyrone Taylor, who flashes one of the best gloves in the game but is, for the most part, a liability at the plate. Bringing in Buxton, an above-average fielder who also happens to be one of the best hitters in the sport, would fill the offensive hole without having to miss a strong defensive presence in center (and if you're thinking about Taylor's elite baserunning, no worries -- Buxton is even better in that regard).
The biggest issue with Buxton is his ability to stay healthy. Since his debut in 2015, Buxton has played in over 100 games in just two seasons, landing on the injured list at least once every year of his career, including 2025 when he missed 10 games after colliding with Carlos Correa.
Although he's missed a few games, Buxton has managed to stay relatively healthy this year and has thrived, slashing .270/.338/.544 with 20 home runs and 53 RBI. The injury history makes trading for Buxton a gamble, but given his talent, it's one the Mets might want to take.
