The Mets should trade for Erick Fedde
Both a free agent target of the Mets and again someone mentioned at the trade deadline, Erick Fedde ended up traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Cardinals. St. Louis failed to make the playoffs and Fedde’s resurgent season went to waste.
Fedde wasn’t quite as good after switching uniforms. At 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA in Chicago, he fell to 2-5 with a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts for the Cardinals. The full season total included a 9-9 record, 3.30 ERA, and 177.1 innings of work.
Fedde had slightly below average strikeout numbers at 21.2% with his walk total better than most at 7.2%. Owed another $7.5 million this coming year, he’s an incredibly affordable pitcher capable of giving the Mets a full and productive year should they choose to make a trade for him.
How available Fedde actually is can be debated. He doesn’t have the length or amount of money owed to him like Gray or Arenado. Flipping him now could be a case of the Cardinals not believing he can repeat what he did last year. Any replacement they could possibly sign as a free agent would cost more money. I’d have my doubts he is even truly available.
As we recently learned, availability is something this last player the Mets should avoid does have.
