Over the weekend, the New York Mets began their first homestand of the season in front of outstanding crowds each day, and completed a three-game series sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at Citi Field. There were plenty of memorable moments throughout this series, including Jesse Winker's big night on Saturday, hitting two triples, and Francisco Lindor driving in the game-winning run with an RBI sacrifice fly that night. However, three notable key highlights are worth following after this series.
1) Pete Alonso
Mets first baseman Pete Alonso showed off his offensive production at the plate this weekend. In his first at-bat during the home opener on Friday, he drove in the first two runs of the game by hitting a two-run home run in the first inning. Although he didn't have a good game on Saturday, he bounced back and drove in the first run of Sunday's game with an RBI single. His total statistics throughout the series include three hits, three RBIs, and a home run in 10 at-bats.
At first, Alonso didn't get off to the start as anticipated. He wasn't getting the big hits that many fans are accustomed to seeing. Now, based on the results from this weekend, he has shown that he is still able to hit for power, including with runners on base.
Alonso appears to have made some improvements at the plate. If he continues to demonstrate ways he can hit for power, especially in critical situations, the chances of him staying with the Mets for more than two years could be very high.
