2) 2018 Brandon Nimmo
Brandon Nimmo hasn’t made an All-Star appearance in his career yet. However, 2018 was one of his best opportunities, and the fact that he didn’t make the All-Star game isn’t the only snub he got. At least 20 other National League outfielders received more votes than Nimmo did during All-Star voting.
Heading into the All-Star break, Nimmo was batting .253/.373/.490 with a .372 wOBA and 139 wRC+. Although he struck out nearly 30% of the time with a 28.9% K%, he also drew plenty of free passes with an 11.9% BB%. Nimmo hit for power as well, with 13 home runs in his first 311 plate appearances of the year, and a .238 isolated slugging percentage.
Nimmo was one of the best outfielders in the National League at this time. His wRC+ led all NL outfielders, and he ranked sixth in OBP, 5th in slugging percentage, and 4th in OPS and isolated slugging percentage. The only NL outfielders who were more valuable in terms of fWAR were Milwaukee Brewers’ Lorenzo Cain, who would end up finishing in the top three in MVP voting in 2018, and Pittsburgh Pirates’ Starling Marte, who was also snubbed from an All-Star appearance.
According to MLB, Nimmo didn’t even rank in the top 20 in votes among just NL outfielders as late as July 2nd. Some players who received more votes at the time included Philadelphia Phillies’ outfielder Oduble Herrera, who didn’t even rank top ten in any notable offensive stats, Atlanta Braves’ Ender Inciarte, who had the third lowest wRC+ of any qualified NL outfielder, and SF Giants’ Andrew McCutchen, who’s only top ten stat was on-base percentage.
