2015 was one of the most special seasons in New York Mets history. A team whose season seemed over in mid-July went on an unexpected run to the World Series. For many younger fans, it's their favorite Mets team.
Yet as hard as it is to believe, that season was a decade ago. 2025 will mark the tenth anniversary of that season. It's becoming a distant memory in the eyes of most. There were so many moments in that season which made it magical. However, three stand out above the rest.
3) Matt Harvey gives the Mets 8 strong innings
The World Series didn't go the way the Mets wanted, but it did give us one of the greatest pitching performances in the Mets' history. Going into Game 5, the Mets were down three games to one and needed a big pitching performance. They turned to their ace Matt Harvey. Harvey who was a year removed from Tommy John surgery took the hill looking to get the Mets back to Kansas City.
Over eight inning Harvey struck out nine and only allowed five base runners. He also was pumping up the crowd at the end of every half inning. Creating an electric atmosphere. Although Harvey faltered in the ninth, and the Mets blew the game it shouldn't take away from how gutsy and dominant Harvey was.
2) David Wright homers in first game back
As great as 2015 was, it was the beginning of the end for David Wright. While rehabbing a hamstring injury it was discovered that Wright had spinal stenosis, putting his career in jeopardy. Everyone wondered if Wright could get back on the field or be the same player.
However, after months of rehabbing, Wright returned to the field on August 24th against the Phillies. In the top of the second Wright stepped up to the plate, and launched a home run into the left field, quieting any concerns that Wright wasn't the same player.
1) Wilmer Flores from tears to cheers
The 2015 season turned Wilmer Flores from an average infielder to a fan favorite. On Wednesday, July 29th they had seemingly traded Flores along with Zack Wheeler to the Brewers for Carlos Gomez. The trade wasn't official so the Mets didn't want to take Flores out and be down a man. However, the trade broke on Twitter and Mets fans gave Flores a proper send-off. This caused Flores to become emotional and challenge the famous baseball adage "There's no crying in baseball".
However, due to concerns over Gomez's medical, the trade was called off and Flores remained a Met. Although upset at the time, fans were happy this trade was nixed two days later. In the bottom of the 12th in the first game of a pivotal series against the Nationals, Flores hit a walk-off home run to cement himself as a Mets legend. Something unthinkable just 48 hours ago.
