We are ready to let Jesse Winker walk

Jesse Winker came to the Mets late last season and his enthusiasm and getting dirty style of play made him an instant favorite with the fans. You could always see him at the top step of the dugout cheering his team on or coming up with an important hit in a big spot. Winkler enjoyed his time with the Mets so much so that he informed his agent to find a way to keep him in New York. The Mets were happy to oblige.

Why are we suggesting that we let Winker walk? While he does possess some intangables, there really isn’t one thing that he does that can’t be replaced in some other way. Winker is a lifetime .262 hitter with a little pop in his bat. Neither qualifies him to be an everyday player anymore. He has a decent glove, but not good enough to be a late game defensive replacement. He has some speed but not enough to be used as a pinch runner.

Winker has played for five teams over the past five years searching for a place that can take full advantage of his talents. At age 32, these talents will only continue to diminish. His spot on the roster should belong to a younger player still trying to show if his potential translates into a major league player. If Winker chooses to stay in baseball, it will probably be with his sixth team in six years next season.
