We want to extend Pete Alonso

OK, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. We are all familiar with the saga of Pete Alonso. The Mets offered him a contract extension. Pete turned it down, opting for free agency and bigger dollars. He had a less than auspicious year by his standards in 2024, the bottom dropped out for the market for free agent first basemen, and Alonso had to resign with the Mets in what amounts to a one year, $30 million contract.

If the pressure of free agency was too much for Alonso last season, it has been a motivating factor this year. Alonso has been putting up MVP numbers. He's hitting for average and with power. Everything we could have wanted from him is getting accomplished on the field.

Not so fast there, Mr. Mets Fan. Pete Alonso’s agent is one Mr. Scott Boras. Boras promised Pete the moon, the stars, and the sun last year but was only able to deliver a few moon rocks. Boras doesn’t take losing lightly. If Alonso finishes with anything close to his season averages of 40 HRs and 110 RBIs, Boras will be looking to get Alonso all the money he had originally sought and then some, particularly if it's from the Mets.

Pete Alonso will be 31 years old in 2026. He will be coming off a year where he made $30 million. It would be nice if cooler heads could prevail and a 3-year contract worth a little more than $100 million could be worked out. I doubt it, not after Juan Soto’s deal. But we can hope. We are Mets fans and hope is something we can always count on.
