The 2025 baseball season is only about a quarter of the way along but it’s never too early to think about the upcoming New York Mets free agents and their future. As with any season, there are several players who we would like to keep around. They have proven their value to us and we would like to convince them to stay right here. The grass (or the money) isn’t necessarily any greener someplace else.
There are also a few who for whatever reason, be it age, salary, diminishing talents, or for any combination of reasons, would be willing to let walk away. Sometimes, this harsh reality might involve losing one of your favorite players. Keep in mind that baseball and to stay in business, all teams have to spend their money wisely.
We want to extend Griffin Canning
Griffin Canning has proven to be a very reliable starting pitcher. He spent his first five years in MLB with the Angels without much success. His career totals were only 25-34 in 94 starts. He became a free agent after the 2024 season. The NY Mets offered him a one-year contract for $4.25 million to make his new address Queens, NY.
Last year, the NY Mets brought in several pitchers who had experienced mixed results with former teams. Starting pitchers Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, and Luis Severino all showed improvement in 2024 after working with pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and it was hoped that he could work some of that same magic with Griffin Canning.
After eight starts this season Canning has a record of 5-1 with 2.36 ERA. If he were to remain on his present trajectory, Griffin Canning might see his name listed on the National League All-Star team. If nothing else, he should definitely be back here with the 2026 Mets.
