Trade speculation surrounding the New York Met has picked up. They got their big fish in free agency with Juan Soto. What’s next for the ball club? More free agent signings are coming, but that major blockbuster deal continues to have fans wondering which prospects to invest their hearts in and who’ll be exchanged at an office white elephant for a proven major leaguer.
Other MLB teams have been actively making trades. From the ones that have already happened, two seemed to have a reasonable enough cost the Mets could have possibly swung. Another yet to occur is one we’d badly like to see occur.
It would have been great if the Mets added Devin Williams
Devin Williams to the Mets seemed foretold long ago. Just like Corbin Burnes was going to immediately rush to sign with the Mets because he knew David Stearns. Who’s to say they liked each other even without the issue of going to arbitration? Burnes seemed destined to land elsewhere. Williams already has.
The New York Yankees pivoted away from Soto quickly and have manically signed Max Fried and traded for Williams. Give them credit. They’ve improved where they were when free agency began. A lineup with several vacant spots, there’s more work to be done.
Why didn’t the Mets make this trade? It’s pretty easy to understand. The Milwaukee Brewers wanted MLB talent. Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbn were the cost. The short-statured yet speedy and stealthy contact hitter whom many Yankees fans believed would take over the third base job helped them land one of the best closers in baseball. The addition of Cortes is something the Mets wouldn’t have been able to match. Their absence of starting pitchers right now would have only made the inclusion of Kodai Senga or David Peterson possible in such a deal. Not happening.
Williams’ last game with the Brewers might’ve included a mashing at the bats of the Mets. We know better than to judge him by that one game.
