Mets winner: The starting pitching staff

Mets starting pitchers have been spectacular this year and that’s with no actual starts from Sean Manaea; just his relief appearance in the final game of the first half. Their 3.38 ERA is 4th in MLB and trails only the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League.

Earned run average might not be everything but it best defines a group’s effectiveness. The group isn’t without its flaws. Their 489.1 innings ranks 22nd in the league. They’ve been carefully protected by Carlos Mendoza who hasn’t been afraid to hook a pitcher early, sometimes to the dismay of fans.

The starters have been prone to walking too many batters (third in MLB) and they don’t strikeout a lot either. For them to come away with such a good ERA in the first half is pretty impressive. It shows there is room for actual improvement.

Rather than blowing away batters with incredible strikeout numbers, the Mets starters are relying on soft contact and ground balls. Their 519 ground ball outs is 6th in MLB.

From the All-Star worthy but abbreviated performance of Kodai Senga down to the career-year Griffin Canning was headed toward before a season-ending injury, the Mets starters have been reliable. The biggest trouble has been and will remain staying healthy.
