2) Overpay for a free agent to load up the bench
The Mets will consider themselves lucky if they can pay a starting pitcher $10 million per year and get an upgraded performance over anyone they already have on the roster. The same goes for a bat. Those players cost a lot more than this $10 million gold toilet. A bench player, however, should be a match.
Luis Rengifo is a versatile defender and bounce back candidate who can cover just about every position. Maybe not a perfect fit for the Mets, maybe the better way to use the $10 million is, in part, to pay for a quality first base defender to play alongside Pete Alonso.
Carlos Santana and Ty France are two good defensive first basemen who should cost far less than $10 million. With the extra cash from the toilet sale, the Mets can be assured one signs with them. Personally, I’d go with the more versatile and younger France to be the late-inning replacement for Alonso.
The Mets paid less than $10 million last year to Jesse Winker in hopes of having him be their left-handed DH option. Players of that caliber, with defensive limitations and maybe a weaker track record in recent seasons, are needed on the Mets roster for next year. It’s arguably one of the missing parts from last year’s team. Although outdated, J.D. Martinez agreed to a one-year deal worth $12 million in 2024.
