The Mets should trade Ronny Mauricio because he doesn’t really have a place

Ronny Mauricio has gone from a legitimate candidate up the middle on the Mets infield to someone who sort of is in the mix for reps at third base. The team showed very little faith in him during the final weeks of the season. As outstanding of a prospect as he seems to have been for years, he has been passed by others and left behind on the depth chart.

Currently 24 with his 25th birthday coming early in the 2026 season, now would be the time to strike with a deal. Mauricio has a minor league option remaining which both takes away urgency to deal him while adding some value. He hit well against righties, slashing .265/.336/.447. But a 3 for 36 performances against lefties has him feeling like a platoon player.

The Mets shouldn’t trade Ronny Mauricio because he might be one year away from figuring it out

If a platoon is what Mauricio ends up in, at least he’s doing his best work against the higher volume pitchers. The trouble is he can’t really be in a platoon with the left-handed hitting Baty. But if Baty goes to second base regularly, maybe there is some room for Mauricio.

It does feel like Mauricio could be some more regular playing time away from truly breaking out. He’s a .306 hitter in Triple-A with 26 home runs in 571 plate appearances. The Mets shouldn’t trade him abruptly and without purpose. No longer classified as a prospect, he’s one of the tougher calls the Mets will need to make with this group of young players.
