The Mets should trade Brett Baty because his value has finally returned

If you’re going to pull the trigger on trading Brett Baty, now is the time to do it. The Mets have shown they have some faith in him, but not enough to convince any fan to put in an order for a Baty jersey this offseason. He might have the best mix of “proven already” and upside among the young position players.

Third base is a tough position to fill. It’s not a current strength in MLB and a guy like Baty can easily be considered in the top 10 at the rate he’s going. Or maybe he just falls flat again. There is a world where Baty regresses and the Mets end up stuck with him trying to figure things out. Using him in a trade package for some pitching wouldn’t be unwise. It always seems like teams have been interested in him, including the Detroit Tigers who have an ace the Mets want.

The Mets shouldn’t trade Brett Baty because he has a role to play next year

Baty didn’t have a season like Vientos did in 2024. Nonetheless, we can appreciate what he was able to accomplish and while playing two positions regularly and quite well. Baty can provide the Mets with some insurance at second base and third base this offseason depending on how things unfold. Third base should be the more likely position for him to play as the team has fewer solutions there.

His 18 home runs and 50 RBI aren’t quite at the level we had dreamed about for all of those years seeing Baty mash in the minors. We’re hoping this is finally the first major step toward being a regular in the majors.
