1 prospect the NY Mets should target most from their top Freddy Peralta trade suitors

You can’t fix a bad boy. Her baggage comes with her. That problem child needs more than an hour of therapy to get right. Teams are apparently convinced they know the solution to what’s ailing Freddy Peralta. As The Athletic’s Will Sammon shared, multiple teams believe they can work a miracle on one of the more puzzling New York Mets trade candidates.

The chance to trade an underperforming player for at least close to the value you gave up for him is outstanding news for the Mets even if it means waving the white flag. It has been inevitable for quite some time that they would be trade deadline sellers. Days to make it all happen, it’s up to the scouts to determine which players are most important to acquire.

Multiple teams mentioned, this prospect is the best and most realistic option that’ll get the Mets to say “yes.”

Who’s at the top of the Mets’ wish list in a Freddy Peralta trade?

Tampa Bay Rays - Caden Bodine

Given the interest around the league in catchers like Francisco Alvarez (who can’t play good defense) and ones who can’t hit all that much (Luis Torrens) we have to believe it wouldn’t be unwise to add another young catcher to the mix. Caden Bodine is one of two top 100 catcher prospects the Tampa Bay Rays have. The second-ranked one, the best-case here is the Mets end up with a surplus of catchers or maybe just not enough innings to divide between Bodine and Alvarez in 2029. Let that be a future problem. He could always end up traded for a different need anyway.

Chicago White Sox - Tanner McDougal

If teams really think they can fix Peralta and have a chance at winning, they’re going to get the Mets to budge with their very best prospects. Tanner McDougal isn’t number one on the list of Chicago White Sox farmhands and yet he appears to be a very good prize for the Mets. Already in Triple-A and likely ready to rock and roll consistently by next year, he’d be a big grab by the Mets in a Peralta deal.

Chicago Cubs - Jonathon Long

Ranking a little further down their prospect list than some of the others mentioned here, the good thing about Jonathon Long is he has played a lot in Triple-A and hammered baseballs. He’s a Chicago Cubs prospect who’d bring company with him in a Peralta trade package as he alone isn’t quite enough. However, he gets the mention here because this right-handed slugging first baseman immediately helps set up for an option at the Mets’ biggest void.

San Diego Padres - Kash Mayfield

A first-round pick from 2024, Kash Mayfield is an up-and-coming San Diego Padres prospect that feels like he could be used cleverly in any trade to acquire major league talent. Several years away from the majors, the Mets take this deal and turn off their phones without thinking twice.

Arizona Diamondbacks - David Hagaman

The Arizona Diamondbacks will have a tough time landing choice one or two at the trade deadline because their farm system isn’t all that amazing or interesting. A piece from last year’s Merrill Kelly trade, David Hagaman, is a South Jersey native having a strong season in High-A. If Peralta’s trade value is what they say it is, at least one more piece will be required.

Milwaukee Brewers -Blake Burke

The Milwaukee Brewers have a lot of first base prospects and one of the more underrated ones is Blake Burke. Thanks to FanGraphs for suggesting this because the guy has mammoth numbers. His 29 home runs in Double-A while batting .281 makes him an absolute must to grab now. The Mets need whatever first base depth they can get.

Texas Rangers - Dalton Pence

Several of the top Texas Rangers prospects are really young and maybe not so available. Dalton Pence is an impressive left-handed pitcher with a 2.77 ERA in Double-A this season. Paired with another player, this would feel satisfying especially when the Rangers don’t even make the playoffs and two of the fresh best Mets prospects came from them.

Philadelphia Phillies - Ramon Marquez

It’s the Philadelphia Phillies so we need them to pay a premium. In this trade, the Mets pick up Ramon Marquez and his 1.83 ERA this season. With only a 3 BB/9 rate with 14.3 K/9 to pair with it, Marquez might be too much for the Phillies to surrender. That’s the cost of asking your mortal enemy for help.

Notably absent from Sammon's story was any mention of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They appear very Clay Holmes-focused if they can't land Tarik Skubal first.
