Justin Willard - Lucas Giolito
Consider this a bonus choice because the Mets haven’t officially hired Justin Willard. It has been a while since there has been any update about the pitching coach situation. In the meantime, let’s play the game with him anyway.
Dustin May fits the narrative of what the Mets have been trying to do with their pitching staff. While a candidate to serve as some depth, his struggles in Boston might not have Willard showing much interest in continuing the project. The same can’t quite be said about Lucas Giolito.
Injuries have been the biggest problem for Giolito in the last two seasons. He missed all of 2024 and ended the 2025 season on the IL. What could it mean for his free agency?
31 going on 32 in July, Giolito is by no means old but the injuries are worrisome. His career numbers aren’t exceptional. With just a 4.30 career ERA with his prime seasons occurring 2019-2021, the Mets would be buying into an inconsistent when healthy arm. More often than not of late, the whole body has been on the IL.
Willard must have a strong take on Giolito of some kind. Pleased or not, he’ll help the Mets resolve any indifference when it comes to Giolito. He knows him personally and can help guide the Mets toward or away from him.
