It was a relatively quiet Monday at New York Mets spring training with the usual sights and sounds of pitchers throwing to catchers. More players are showing up with one of the most noteworthy arrivals being Luke Weaver.
It’s not because of who he is but what he wore. Over his shoulder was a New York Yankees equipment bag.

We’ve been here before. Last year, Nick Madrigal showed up to Mets camp with a Chicago Cubs bag slung over his shoulder. A far easier faux pas to overlook as a utility player signed to a minimal contract, Weaver’s overlooked fashion statement has Mets and Yankees fans a bit confused as to who he was trolling and if it was a troll at all.

Elaborate joke, overlooked moment, or someone didn’t do their job and Luke Weaver doesn’t care?
Yanks Go Yard knows Weaver better than we do and they’re not sure if it was a diss their way or some kind of a secret code toward his ex-team. Weaver never did get a contract offer from the Yankees. This seems to eliminate any sort of a friendly message sent over to Tampa where the Yankees will train.
Weaver is known for being a little…different. It’s not bad. He’s clever and has a personality which isn’t always the case with ballplayers. There’s something chameleon-like about him. His sense of humor feels like it would fit in with just about any dynamic. Are we sure he was ever a starting pitcher? He has the vibes of a reliever.
What did Luke Weaver work on this offseason?

This kind of oversight by Weaver, if it was indeed one for him to blame, is the kind of thing that could drop a kid’s stock in the NFL Draft. But this is baseball. Things work a little differently. And as a reliever, quirkiness fits.
The simplest explanation is likely the true one here. No protocol was in place to actually send Weaver a bag and he grabbed whatever he had lying around which would have been Yankees issued. The Mets will be his seventh big league team so he is used to changing uniforms and coming to camp with different bags. He might have a whole collection of them lying around his garage. The only thing stranger would have been a bag with the logo of a team prior to joining the Yankees.
If he has any St. Louis Cardinals paraphernalia lying around, that’s exactly what he should show up with next.
