3) The Mets sign Alex Bregman and make Brett Baty a regular at first base
Let’s get back to Brett Baty briefly. Even if he doesn’t end up traded, there’s room for a position change. He proved he can handle second base well. What about first base?
An almost acceptable direction could be to sign Alex Bregman and move Baty across the diamond to become a regular at first base. It’s not perfect and with few signs the Mets even have interest in Bregman for the second straight winter, you shouldn’t bet the family farm on seeing it happen.
Bregman’s market has been undervalued and it’s probably moving slowly because the demands are higher than what Pete Alonso ended up getting from the Baltimore Orioles. A return to the Boston Red Sox seems most practical although a team like the Detroit Tigers or even the Philadelphia Phillies often come up when the idea of a Bregman destination is mentioned. Would the Los Angeles Angels dare sign him?
Bregman already settled on a short deal last offseason and to agree to one this winter on the expected Mets’ terms would be a shock. He turns 32 in March and with greater needs for the starting pitching staff and outfield, this would be a twist possibly focused on a younger outfield for the coming year.
