3 potential trade partners who could complete the NY Mets' roster

The NY Mets are one of the best teams in baseball. But they should still be active at the trade deadline, and these three teams have players that would fully complete the Mets' roster.

Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are having one of the most disappointing seasons in baseball. After winning over 90 games in 2023 and 2024, they now sit with a 26-37 record. Barring a scorching hot June and July, the Orioles will be selling off (at least short-term pieces). Their center fielder, Cedric Mullins, could be the boost the Mets need up the middle.

Mullins is about as consistent as you can get with the stick. He is always an average or better producer, and 2025 is no different. He is slashing .232/.324/.448 with a .339 wOBA and 122 wRC+ through 200 plate appearances. His 25.1% strikeout rate is a career-worst, but he is offsetting it with a career-best 11.1% walk rate and a quality .215 isolated slugging percentage.

Mullins’ defense in the outfield is getting mixed reviews by metrics. He has -9 defensive runs saved in only 427.1 innings, but he also has +2 outs above average. Mullins is slightly below average when it comes to jumps on fly balls, but has good route running skills. Average defense with his hitting will suffice, as Tyrone Taylor could always be a defensive replacement if the Mets feel they need to do so late into games.

The O’s have a lefty reliever that may interest the Mets in Gregory Soto. Soto’s 4.15 ERA and 1.38 WHIP may not be that impressive, but he has a quality 3.12 FIP. The hard-throwing lefty has a 26.8% strikeout percentage but, more impressively, is putting up a career-low 8.2% walk rate. Although Soto has a 90.9 MPH exit velocity, his 3.2% barrel rate is in the 97th percentile, almost atop all of baseball. Soto has a 3.23 xFIP, 3.05 SIERA, and 3.07 xERA, showing that he has more potential than his ERA suggests.

The last player on the O’s that may intrigue the Mets is Ryan O’Hearn. O’Hearn was picked up by the Orioles in the 2022-2023 offseason for cash from the KC Royals. After two quality seasons at the plate, O’Hearn is now putting up career-best numbers, including a .317/.402/.505 triple-slash, .396 wOBA, and 162 wRC+. He already has nine home runs across 214 plate appearances. O’Hearn has struck out just 16.8% of the time and has an 11.2% walk rate.

This does depend on the Mets’ DH situation. They could potentially get Jesse Winker back into the fold sometime this month. If he doesn’t suffer any setbacks and hits well upon his return, the Mets don’t have a need for O’Hearn. But if the Mets need a lefty-hitting DH option, O’Hearn would be the best by far. He’s having a very underrated season, and if the Mets need someone to support Starling Marte at DH, O’Hearn is the answer.
