This week, it was reported that the Kansas City Royals were “more open” to trading Whit Merrifield. This two-time league leader in hits, two-time leader in stolen bases, and incredibly versatile player would be a fit for any team looking to add offense before the end of next week. Fortunately, his name did appear in the latest New York Mets trade rumors as well.

According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are one of the teams with interest in Merrifield.

It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to understand why. Merrifield is one of the game’s most unique players and a highly underrated star buried on the Royals. Seeing his name appear in Mets trade rumors should get you all giddy inside. However, the chances of a trade remain slim.

Whit Merrifield’s name belongs alongside any other Mets trade rumors you may see over the next few days

Although he has already blown out 32 candles on his birthday cake (that’s equivalent to two Molly Ringwald movies), Merrifield continues to produce. He’s the current American League leader in stolen bases so there’s no “slow down effect” at his age. The man can still fly on the base paths and cause chaos with his legs.

Primarily a second baseman, the Mets could potentially use him at a variety of positions. Think of it as having another Jeff McNeil on the roster.

As tantalizing as he is, these Mets trade rumors don’t suggest anything is close at all. The Mets would be absolute fools to not have interest in him.

On an incredibly reasonable contract, he’s not someone the Royals have an urgency to move. Perhaps they are just hoping someone makes them a Godfather offer they cannot refuse.

The trade deadline has been relatively quiet up until this point with Nelson Cruz being the biggest name to swap uniforms. With one week left to go, I expect to see more Mets trade rumors and actual execution of deals as soon as you finish reading this sentence.

Merrifield would be a dream addition to the Mets. Able to add the element of speed to a team that lacks it, the Royals’ openness now could at least hint at maybe a future deal in the offseason. We can only hope!
