Mets may have to wait until midseason to dump a high-salary reliever

The club hasn’t been focused only on adding to the roster. The Mets have also been looking to dump some salary. Specifically, it’s the contracts Jeurys Familia and Dellin Betances have coming their way.

I’m not confident they will get their opportunity in the middle of the year. Stranger things have happened. In the right deal, someone might be willing to buy and eat up the remainder of the contract. After all, both expire post-2021.

Mets trade rumors involving Familia and Betances aren’t the most fascinating for a couple of reasons. Nobody gets very excited about the idea of subtracting “dead weight” from the franchise. That’s essentially all any trade involving this pair would involve.

These two both enter the year with major question marks. Maybe the most likely scenario where we do see either traded is if the team performs poorly and they don’t. It’s tough to imagine the Mets are below .500 in July but have a good bullpen. The complete opposite is far more possible.

For a positive spin, maybe trading one of these two involves a salary dump in the opposite direction as well. This can turn out well for New York.

I’ll remain cautiously optimistic for now and instead hope these two perform up to their contracts.
