Action is beginning to pick up in Major League Baseball. According to the latest New York Mets rumors, the club remains the favorite to sign free agent outfielder George Springer.

The MLB hot stove limped in and out of the winter meetings without much happening. A few New York Mets rumors have been tossed around, mostly involving interest in some of the hottest free agents available.

The club did manage to snag James McCann in a four-year deal over the weekend. Fortunately, even after making this one impact signing, Mets rumors indicate they remain favorites to sign outfielder George Springer. As Jon Heyman notes, the McCann signing will still allow the club to ink Springer to a deal and maybe add a few other names.

Springer is one of the next dominos we are all hoping fall in favor of the Amazins. Alongside Trevor Bauer, he fills one of the club’s greatest needs.

A three-time All-Star with a lifetime average of 35 home runs per 162 games, Springer is a monster at the plate. His postseason success cannot be ignored especially for a team like the Mets lacking much experience beyond September baseball.

If the Mets are able to snag Springer, they are getting more than a productive regular season player. They are also adding in a guy with 63 games of postseason experience. The 2017 World Series MVP is certainly a franchise-altering addition the club needs to make.

Springer has been a fit for the Mets for quite some time. Their lack of a true center fielder (I know Brandon Nimmo die-hards are sick of this) has made him a target for fans ever since they realized he’d become available after the 2020 season.

What I like most about Springer is how he makes everything else work defensively. He slots in at center field and allows the Mets to move Nimmo over to left. J.D. Davis scoots up to third base and Jeff McNeil takes his rightful place at second base while Robinson Cano sits at home for a year.

Other recent Mets rumors have focused on another part of the roster in need of some improvement. Bauer is still another guy the club could really use for the rotation. In the bullpen, Liam Hendriks has emerged as a possibility. I suspect other names will appear in upcoming Mets rumors as well.
