The New York Mets will pivot their search from a President of Baseball Operations to just a General Manager and Amiel Sawdaye is the man for the job.

Since Steve Cohen and Sandy Alderson took over the New York Mets organization, they have been looking to fill some front office executive positions.

They started with the structure of a two-headed approach. Alderson spoke about how they wanted to find a President of Baseball Operations first and then that person would find someone to fill the role of General Manager.

After a couple of weeks, we heard from Sandy Alderson that they have shifted their focus to solely looking for a General Manager and not a President of Baseball Ops.

Sandy cited limited access due to lateral moves for potential candidates and nothing really materialized. He stated that he would like to find a GM that could eventually grow into the President role over time.

I believe that this is the right move for the organization. There is no need for the Mets to hire a President for the sake of hiring someone. Having just a GM with the expectation that they will grow into the higher role is the better path than just settling.

So, who could be a good fit for this new GM role while also having the skill set to be able to learn the ropes and grow into the top executive the Mets build their front office around?

My top choice is Arizona Diamondbacks Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager Amiel Sawdaye.

Why the Mets should hire Amiel Sawdaye

Amiel Sawdaye has been with the Diamondbacks since 2016 and is one of the bright young executives in baseball. He recently interviewed for the San Francisco Giants GM back in 2018 as well as for the Los Angeles Angels job this offseason and was one of the finalists.

Sawdaye comes from a scouting background and spent 15 years with the Boston Red Sox organization in various scouting roles including VP of Amateur and International Scouting where he was integral in the Red Sox drafting players like Travis Shaw, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Mookie Betts.

I think that Sawdaye would do very well as the Mets GM and would be a great executive to build the Mets front office around. Additionally, general managers that have extensive scouting backgrounds typically make the best GMs which is another feather in the cap of Amiel Sawdaye.

Sandy Alderson said that the Mets have interviewed about half a dozen people for the GM job and I have no idea if Sawdaye was one of those six people but I hope he was and if he was I hope the Mets like him as much as I do.

The Mets need smart young executives that are willing to bring the team into the current generation with the use of analytics as well as combining the old school approach with the new school approach.

I fully believe that Amiel Sawdaye is one of the best people to do that for the New York Mets organization.
