The affinity between New York Mets Team President Sandy Alderson and free-agent starting pitcher Trevor Bauer has begun to make headlines around the league.

Over the last several days’ free-agent starting pitcher Trevor Bauer and New York Mets team President Sandy Alderson have shared public admiration for one another, and it has left many Mets fans wondering if this is any inclination that a marriage between the organization and Bauer is a realistic possibility this offseason?

Alderson had first made mention of the 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner in a recent radio interview on WFAN and he spoke on how Bauer’s character would fit well in the New York market. “I actually think Bauer would be a great personality in New York. I think he’s the kind of guy that fans would embrace”, stated Alderson.

After Alderson had made this comment, among other a slew of other positive remarks about Bauer potentially pitching in New York, the wheels began spinning in Mets fans’ minds about the opportunity to have two recent National League Cy Young Award winners pitching in the same starting rotation.

The response that Alderson would receive in return from Bauer only fueled the potential speculation that this scenario could be a reality. During Bauer’s Cy Young Award-winning press conference, the 29-year old starting pitcher would extend his gratitude to Alderson for his positive remarks and seemingly having his back.

“I heard Sandy’s comments and it was refreshing to hear him speak that way about me. “In the past, a lot of the narrative surrounding me is I can’t handle a big market, a big media market. I was a headcase or whatever the case is. That’s kind of been the narrative.

So to hear that someone as high-ranking as Sandy feels the way he feels about that is refreshing and good to hear him speak like that. I’m certainly appreciative of that.”

This is the dawn of a new era in Mets baseball. As we have previously seen with owner Steve Cohen’s direct appreciation for pitchers Marcus Stroman and Noah Syndergaard on Twitter, the Mets and Trevor Bauer’s affinity for one another is playing out in front of our eyes in the press clippings. With as much negative spin that the Mets have received in the press for the last decade, the tide has begun to turn in a more positive direction, and the Mets are transforming into a welcoming destination for high profile players that have big personalities.

It’s quite a sight to see to watch a high-profile free agent and a member of the Mets front office publicly flirt with one another. You can certainly chalk this up as one of the things we thought we’d never see in 2020 but yet here we are.

The Mets have the rare ability this offseason to build a super-rotation with the addition of Trevor Bauer to a pitching staff that already includes ace Jacob deGrom, rising rookie David Peterson, and a recently re-signed Marcus Stroman. Don’t forget that Noah Syndergaard who is currently making his way back from Tommy John surgery will be inserting himself in the Mets rotation at some point next summer as well.

There is no doubt that it certainly will take a large sum of money for any team to land Trevor Bauer this offseason. Aside from the money, Sandy Alderson may have put the Mets in the best possible position to land Bauer this offseason after speaking highly of his craft and personality, which are often criticized by many around the league.

With the Mets publicly accepting who Trevor Bauer is and will most likely be for the rest of his career, it could go a long way towards the All-Star pitcher feeling more at home at Queens than in any of the other organizations vying for his services this winter.
